Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — With elections less than two weeks away, NBC33 News is keeping you up-to-date and introducing you to the candidates running for office. Today, we introduce you to Secretary of State candidate Jim Tucker.
Tucker is running after being term-limited from running again at his current position as Speaker of the State House of Representatives.
He's up against incumbent Secretary of State Tom Schedler. Tucker says his issue with Schedler is not so much what he has done with his time in office, but what he hasn't done while elected.
Tucker says more can be done to increase voter participation, streamline resources for small business, and also save budgets at state museums to make sure they remain open.
"I want to do more with the office than it's historically done,” said Tucker. “There are statutory constitutional authorities that Secretary of State's Office has never taken advantage of. I think a new vision for the office… is something I can do."
Tucker says his experience as Speaker of the State House of Representatives has prepared him to be Secretary of State. In his time there, he says they were able to do more with less, and takes credit for the legislature becoming more transparent, and providing more services to the constituents.
