Mayor Pro-Tem Mike Walker says BRPD is wasting resources responding to false alarms.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Dwayne White says in a given year, officers respond to up to 15,000 alarms, 97 percent of which turn out to be false, and it's a growing problem.

The police department is going before the metro council to propose possible fines for repeat violators.

Walker says he's behind this proposal.

"People need to get their alarms fixed,” said Walker. “Those police officers need to be on the streets right now, catching criminals and preventing some of these crimes. We need to be proactive rather than running around chasing fire alarms. We need to be chasing criminals."

The Baton Rouge Metro Council will vote on the police department's proposal on Wednesday.
