Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards has announced he’s running for US Congress. Edwards served four terms as Governor of Louisiana. He served from 1972-1980, 1984-1988, and 1992-1996. Edwards hopes to replace Dr. Bill Cassidy (R), who’s stepping down from Louisana’s 6th Congressional District to run against US Senator Mary Landrieu (D). Edwards made the announcement Monday at a meeting of the Baton Rouge Press Club.

Edwards told Bloomberg reporter Albert Hunt in February, “I’m the only hope the Democrats have here.” Edwards was referring to the primarily Republican 6th Congressional District of Louisiana which includes Ascension Parish, Assumption Parish, East Baton Rouge Parish, East Feliciana Parish, Iberville Parish, Lafourche Parish, Livingston Parish, Pointe Coupee Parish, St. Charles Parish, St. Helena Parish, St. John the Baptist Parish, Terrebonne Parish, and
West Baton Rouge Parish.

Edwin Washington Edwards was born August 7, 1927 in rural Avoyelles Parish, near Marksville, LA. As a young man, Edwards said he planned to become a preacher. However, after World War II, he attended Louisiana State University and graduated from law school. He practiced law in Crowley, LA, in Acadia Parish.

Edwards is no stranger to controversy or corruption. In 2001, he was found guilty of racketeering charges and sentenced to ten years in federal prison. He went to prison in Fort Worth, TX in 2002. He was later transferred to the federal prison in Oakdale, LA.

Recently, Edwards and his third wife Trina starred in a reality show “The Governor’s Wife” on the A&E Network. The network dropped the show before the first season was complete.

Edwards is a Democrat. As an outspoken supporter of civil rights, Edwards appointed more African-Americans and women to key positions in state government than any governor before him.

Edwards divorced his first wife, Elaine, in 1989 after forty years of marriage. They have four children together: Anna Edwards, Victoria Edwards, Stephen Edwards, and David Edwards.
In 1994, he married Candy Picou, and they tried unsuccessfully to have a child together. While Edwards was in federal prison, he filed for divorce from Picou, and their divorce was finalized in 2004.

In 2011, Edwards married 32-year-old Trina Grimes Scott in a lavish ceremony at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans. Edwards and Scott were prison pen pals. Scott was born during Edwards’ second term as Louisiana Governor, and she’s 51-years younger than he is. The couple sought medical help to have a baby. In August of 2012, Trina gave birth to their son, Eli Wallace Edwards.
