BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — One Democratic State Representative shared his plan to avoid hospital budget cuts with members of the press Monday.
Representative Stephen Ortego has promised to write laws, he says, that will be more sustainable in the long run than the Governor's private-public hospital partnerships. He believes by giving the local health districts control over their hospitals, those hospitals will be able to do a better job for people.
“You give them the hospital, they can still continue to enter in to public-private partnerships, but they also have over sight. They understand what that local community needs more than someone at LSU,” Ortego explained.
Ortego also said that each health district will be able to decide if they want to pass taxes or bond agreements to fund the charity hospitals in their districts as well. He also stressed his belief that without a good healthcare system Louisiana can't improve their education systems either.
