BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — The Baton Rouge Metro Council Crime Committee met Monday, amid the backdrop of a spike in violence recently.
The Committee's goal is long-term reduction in crime throughout East Baton Rouge Parish through several initiatives.
The Committee includes all the heads of law enforcement, and their top priorities include a new parish prison, and a juvenile detention center. Those two projects alone carry a price tag of about $200 million.
"This is a good way to justify what we're asking for, by meeting like this,” said Sheriff Sid Gautreaux. “Or decide a better way without the bond issue."
Whatever the Committee decides on will ultimately have to be approved by voters next year.
