WASHINGTON (NBC33) — A Louisiana Senator is responsible for passing an amendment that will prohibit convicted murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from being able to receive food stamps.
The amendment to the Farm Bill was submitted by David Vitter. It passed unopposed.
Under the current law, only convicted drug felons are prevented from being able to receive federally funded food stamps. Now, that also includes violent offenders and child predators. States will not be allowed to opt out of this ban.
Recently an audit of the Louisiana food stamp program revealed that over $1.1 million was issued to 1,761 people who were in prison. The audit spanned a two year period.
The Senate also considered a bid to turn the federal food stamp program over to the states. Currently the program is run by the Agriculture Department and federal dollars are unlimited as long as recipients qualify. That bid was rejected.
The program is currently under scrutiny due to nation-wide inflated claims over the past few years.
