Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — A bill that would have made sexual contact between a psychotherapist and his patients illegal was shelved today.
Nicole Dion promised to come back to the Capitol again next year to fight for the passage of this bill in Louisiana.
The proposed bill is a law in 25 other states; Dion is pushing to see this become law here as well.
She claims she was coerced into a sexual relationship with her psychotherapist.
"I am not a victim, I am a survivor of this horrific act,” stated Dion “As it stands in legislation right now, there is no penalty for that."
Dion said that the law needs to be in place so that it’s illegal for people in trusted positions, such as counselors and therapists, to have relationships with patients.
Lawmakers stated that they put the bill on hold today so that they could get more information on it.
