Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — A bill to keep handheld cell phones off the roads was voted down in the House today.

The bill was initially passed through the House Transportation Committee earlier this week.

Backers said it would have have improved highway safety, and gotten rid of an extra distraction behind the wheel.

Similar laws were passed in nine other states, including New York.
