BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Here in Louisiana, 31. 6 percent of adults are obese. That's why six people are stepping up with the help of NBC33 News. They will reach inside themselves to find the strength to finally get fit.
" I've decided that I come first," said contestant Carole Walker. "The hardest part is probably going to be the push ups. I hate doing push ups. "
NBC33 News has partnered with Bally Total Fitness Baton Rouge to give the contestants a chance to work out with a personal trainer and lose the weight in a safe and healthy way.
As a group, they weigh in at a whopping 1,403 pounds.
For the next six months they will hit the gym, and NBC33 News producer Kris Cusanza will be among them. Contestants will have to give up their favorite foods.
Contestant James Henry says dessert will be tough not to taste. "Anything apple desert related," said Henry, "I could eat an entire apple pie and not even feel bad about it. I'd feel nauseous I wouldn't feel guilty."
They all gained the weight for different reasons but being fit for family seems to be the biggest source of motivation for this group.
Firefighter and contestant James Newman said losing weight will help him be a better father. "At 40-years-old I have a three year old, so it's kind of hard to keep up with him," said Newman.
The workouts will be tough and at times the trainers may feel like their worst enemy, but in the end they all know the trainers are there to help them get over fitness fears.
Contestant Anita Katzman said she is ready to make the change.
"Keeping it that way being consistent being able to just keep the habits going," said Katzman. "I'm really ready for this. I'm going to be dedicated. I just hope that i can stay consistent and keep it up for the rest of my life."
For the first three months one player per month gets disqualified and loses their personal trainer. They still get a chance to participate in program, but without any help from their trainer. The last three contestants get a chance to compete in a final fitness challenge.
