ZACHARY, LA (NBC33) — The Zachary City Council is considering ending its speed van program.
According to the city, its contract with Redflex ends in September. They've had an enforcement trailer for the last five years.
Police chief David McDavid says it made a lot of money for Zachary in the first two years, but the number of tickets issued and the amount of money collected have dropped significantly since 2010.
“It does (make money), but drivers get to a point where they're used to where it's at, and they slow down, and once they pass it, they speed back up," said McDavid.
McDavid said one of the benefits of having officers issue speeding tickets instead of the machine is the face-to-face contact between officers and residents.
He said those quick conversations often lead to information about other crimes.
