A four year old girl is in state’s custody after she was found walking alone down a dangerous road in Lafayette.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office was called to Le'Violon Road at roughly 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 1. A concerned citizen spotted the young girl as he was driving to work. He quickly intervened and called for help.

“He pulled into the nearest driveway and turned around. He was on the phone with 911,” the wife of the concerned citizen said. “He was so shaken up about the whole situation.

“When the cops arrived they asked her if she knew where she lived and all she could say was she lived in a white house.”

Deputies searched for the girl’s home by going door to door in the nearby area. Officials tell us that it took roughly two hours, but they eventually found the correct home less than a quarter of a mile away from where the girl was found.

“We found a residence with its back door wide open,” Cpt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Sheriff’s Office, said.

Investigators entered the home after identifying it as the correct residence. The child’s caregiver was inside the home sleeping.

“The child was in the custody of her 19 year old stepsister,” Cpt. Judice said. “The father is working off shore and the mother is incarcerated. We believe the child was sleeping on the couch when she woke up and unlocked the back door, then walked out of hte house alone.”

The young girl was taken into protective custody by the Department of Children & Family Services. They say this is the second time the girl has been found by alone outside of the home.

The investigation is ongoing.
