Many people have fond childhood memories of learning to ride a bike, but for children with physical and developmental disabilities, it’s a milestone they usually miss out on. Wheels to Succeed is a local nonprofit organization partnered with McMains Children’s Developmental Center. Together, these programs provide children with physical disabilities their own adapted three-wheeled bikes, as well as opportunities to ride these bikes in cost-free organized activities.

These bikes, which can cost anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 each, are a major expense for these children’s families. Wheels to Succeed is partnering with three local businesses throughout the month of March to show support during National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and to help provide more bikes for children in need. The program hopes to raise $1,250 through the following three fundraising events:

  • March 19 – Bistro Byronz, 5412 Government St., 5-9 p.m.
  • March 20 – Raising Canes, 3313 Highland Road (LSU campus location), all day
  • March 25 – Schlitz and Giggles, 2355 Ferndale Ave. (Perkins location), 6-10 p.m.

Guests are asked to mention “Wheels to Succeed” when placing their orders, so that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the organization. The fundraisers are applicable with dine-in, carry-out and catering orders.
