LIVINGSTON PARISH, La (NBC33) — The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will put more wetlands under their protection. Officials say they've added 29,630 acres of land to the Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area.
Wildlife and Fisheries partnered with the Conservation Fund and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority to buy that tract of land at about $6.5. Now, they'll make sure those wetlands stay protected.
"It will give a tremendous recreational opportunities," says Secretary Robert Barham, "bird watching opportunities, fishing, and the conservation and protection of a treasure, an American treasure."
The newly added wetlands span Livingston, Ascension, St. James, and St. John the Baptist parishes. Altogether, the Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area makes up more than 103,000 acres of property.
