JEFFERSON PARISH, LA — An elderly man whose wheelchair was not properly restrained was killed during a fatal crash on Clearview Parkway.
On September 3 at around 11:25 a.m., State Troopers investigated a crash that took the life of Paul Burke, 85, of Jefferson, who was a passenger in a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country.
A preliminary investigation showed that Jean Burke, 84, of Jefferson, was driving the vehicle east on the south I-10 Service Road. Jean entered a curve to the left, and for unknown reasons, traveled off the road to the right and entered the southbound lanes of LA 3152, striking a tractor/trailer, driven by Matthew Mitchell, 54, of Harvey. The car then ran off the road to the right where it came to rest.
Paul Burke was seated on the front passenger side of the vehicle in a wheelchair that was not tethered or anchored to the vehicle. He was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center and later pronounced dead.
Jean Burke was transported to the Level 1 Trauma Center with critical injuries.
Impairment is not suspected as a factor of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
