An elderly couple were killed in a crash yesterday afternoon and Troopers believe the driver who caused it was speeding.

The Louisiana State Police report that the crash occurred on US 61 south of Pride Port Hudson Road in East Baton Rouge parish shortly after noon on Sunday, Sept. 9. The roadway remained closed for approximately one hour while Troopers investigated the crash and cleared the scene.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Kenneth Cavin, 19, of St. Francisville was driving a 2006 Ford pickup north on US 61 when he lost control, crossed the median, and became airborne. As it rolled over, the pickup struck the top of a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis, being driven by Willie Ross Sr., 84, of Baton Rouge. Ross and his passenger, Jonas Ross, 81, were both pronounced deceased at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

A third vehicle was struck by debris during the crash and the driver was uninjured.

Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor in the crash. However, they have submitted blood samples of each of the drivers to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Troopers do suspect speed to have been a factor in the crash, and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
