WALKER, LA (NBC33) — A Denham Springs woman was killed in a train/car collision just east of Walker Wednesday evening. Walker Police report that the accident occurred at approximately 4:50 pm at the Canadian National Railroad crossing of Sunland Drive, near its intersection with Florida Blvd. According to Walker Police, Laraye London-Phillips, 29, was transported by Air Med to a local hospital after first responders were able to free her from the wreckage.
“Upon her arrival at the hospital, Ms London-Phillips was pronounced dead,” said Walker Police Public Information Officer, Captain John Sharp.
Witnesses told Walker Police that the Chevy HHR operated by the victim turned onto Sunland Drive from Florida Blvd and was hit by the train.
“Our investigating officers have determined that Ms. London-Phillips was traveling east on Florida Blvd when she turned left onto Sunland Drive and drove into the path of the westbound CN locomotive,” Captain Sharp reported. “Upon impact, the train pushed the victim’s vehicle west well over 1000 feet before it was able to stop.”
The CN crossing at Sunland Drive is unmarked. However, witnesses told Walker Police that the train was sounding its warning horn as it approached the crossing. A toxicology report on the victim is pending and the accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.
