Vacant hospital catches fire in Lafayette

Shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Agust 22, firefighters responded to the old Lourdes Hospital on St. Landry Street to a report of heavy smoke coming from the roof.

When firefighters arrived, there was a small fire on the roof top of the third floor. Emergency crews were able to quickly extinguish the keeping it from spreading further. The roof area sustained minor fire damage.

The old hospital is vacant. Construction crews were working on removing asbestos and building materials earlier today. In the process, a cutting torch is used. The material removed were stacked on the roof.

The fire was caused by the heated material igniting other combustible material. The fire was accidental.
