Crowds gathered at the USS Kidd downtown all day on July 4th. The biggest surprise? The simulated air attack with the Kidd fighting off vintage bombers.

The Kidd's "Star Spangled Celebration" is their largest fundraiser. This year, they got extra help from a popular television show, the Discovery Channel's "Sons of Guns".

The Baton Rouge-based reality show beefed up the pyrotechnics for today's re-enactment. It had lots of guns and canons firing from the ship and underwater explosions, just feet from the crowd.

"It just, it gives you chills. Your heart starts pounding. It makes you proud to be an American," said Maury Dummond, USS Kidd Executive Director.
