BATON ROUGE,LA (NBC33) — U.S. Representative Billy Cassidy, of Congressional District Six hosted a job fair focused on helping veterans and other unemployed residents find work.
Over forty businesses took part in the event. Some positions available ranged from: medical billing to petrochemical refinery work.
Representative Cassidy says many jobs are opening up here in Louisiana because of people retiring, and companies are looking to hire local.
"There are lots of folks retiring from the petrochemical industry in five to ten years," said Rep. Cassidy. "Look at somebody working at the coffee shop as a cashier. She could go to work here double triple her salary. It'll fulfill our industries need and help her family."
Event goer Katrina Welch spent the past year looking for a job. She said events like today are important, because losing your job affects every part of your life.
" I lost my home," said Welch. "I had to move to a different location. At my age that is a scary thing. "
The job fair had special opportunities for veterans including: free career development advice, and the Louisiana Department of Veteran's Affairs was on hand to explain veterans benefits.
