United Blood Services tells NBC33 News the demand for type O-negative blood is so big they just don't have enough to go around. They say the timing is critical with the holiday season, and they need donors now more than ever.

“It can be given to anyone in an extreme emergency situation when there is no time to crossmatch the donor’s blood with the patient’s,” explained LeaAnn Teague, Satellite Center Director United Blood Services, this area’s non-profit community blood service provider. “When you do the math, our community needs people who are O-negative to give blood at least twice as often as everyone else!”

Another special need for O-negative blood is in the treatment of babies. Neonatal care facilities require fresh units of O-negative blood each day to treat their tiny patients.

United Blood Services, 8234 One Calais Avenue in Baton Rouge is open:

  • Monday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Friday: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Sunday: 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In fact there are 8 different blood groups found in the world, but apart from these 8 groups we identify "O Negative" is the only universal blood donor group, so in extreme emergency situations we preferred O negative blood group peoples. Here we found how health organizations are refining their O Negative blood groups especially for emergency situations.
