THIS IS AN NBC33NEWS UPDATE: Troopers say James Lee, 58, was riding on the tongue of a float that was being pulled by a pick up truck. Lee was crushed by the float and hit by a second truck.

Lee died at the scene. Troopers do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.

THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE (7:45 p.m.): The person fell off the float has been confirmed to have died of the injuries sustained from being run over. NBC33 will keep you updated with more details as we find them out.

ORIGINAL STORY (2/21/12): Shortly after the New Roads parade a float rider fell off and was run over.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. near the new Audubon Bridge. Sources tell NBC33 News that the accident happened right before the float crossed the bridge.

The Louisiana State Police are working this case. No official details have been released yet on the status of the patient, or how the incident occurred.

Sources who were at the scene tell NBC33 News that the float made a short stop, which is what caused the rider to fall off and then get run over.

We’ll have a full report coming up on NBC33 News at 10:00 p.m.
