A 10-year-old girl died yesterday after the car she was a passenger in flipped and crashed. We’re told the child was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash happened at roughly 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20. The vehicle was traveling on Highway 40 in Tangipahoa Parish.

Officials say the car was being driven by an unlicensed 15-year-old female. At some point the car drifted off the paved roadway. When the teen attempted to maneuver back onto the road, she overcorrected and caused the car to rotate counterclockwise. The car entered a ditch and that’s when it flipped and ejected two unrestrained juveniles from the car.

The 12-year-old male in the front seat of the car was not wearing a seatbelt and he was fully ejected from the car. A 9-year-old boy was in the right rear position and he was wearing a seatbelt, so he remained inside the car. A 10-year-old female was in the left rear passenger seat and she was partially ejected from the vehicle.

All of the juveniles were transported to local hospitals. The 10-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. The remaining juveniles have minor to moderate injuries.

Investigators do not suspect impairment on the part of the driver. However, possible charges are pending.
