One of the biggest blood collection agencies in the country is downsizing its local operations.

United Blood Services announced that it's laying off about 10-percent of its workforce in southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

United gets all of its revenue from hospitals, but with their funding being slashed, hospitals can't afford to pay as much for blood these days. Even though its cutting its staff and reducing its hours, United says it needs blood donors as much as ever before.

"[Blood] is kind of like a gallon of milk in your refrigerator,” Leaann Teague, United Blood Services, explained. “It has an expiration date, so it's not good forever. We constantly need blood donors coming through our doors, to replenish that blood supply."

United says the changes won't take place until the end of the year and It's trying to find jobs for its employees at other locations around the country, or giving them outplacement help so they can get a new job.
