TANIGIPAHOA PARISH, LA — Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 55 shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31. The crash took place approximately 2 miles south of the LA 442 exit and claimed the life of the driver, Brandon Sance, 19, and front seat passenger, Kassie Toups, 22, both of Independence, LA.
Troopers' preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Sance was traveling southbound on I-55 in a 1991 Dodge Caravan when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted off road to the left and entered the center grass median. The Dodge Caravan continued off road in the median for approximately 329 feet before impacting a guardrail directly underneath the LA 1064 overpass. Upon impact with the guardrail, the van overturned onto its right side and continued forward striking the overpass support column with its roof.
Both Sance and Toups sustained fatal injuries in the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.
Both occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected pending the results of a toxicology exam.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road.
Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
