Two killed by train accident in Kenner
KENNER, LA (WDSU) — Kenner police said two people were killed in a train accident Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened near the intersection of the Kenner - St. Charles line and the CN Railroad tracks off Airline Highway on Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators said the fatal accident involved Amtrak train 59, which was traveling from Chicago to New Orleans, and a vehicle.
The two occupants inside the vehicle were killed on impact, police said.
Lt. Wade McInnis with the Kenner Police Department said the roadway the vehicle was traveling on before the accident was not a public roadway and was actually owned by the East Jefferson Levee District. McInnis said signs marked the intersection as a railroad, but the vehicle apparently failed to yield to the locomotive.
The 62 people on the train were not injured in the fatal accident.
