Truck flips on I-12 and causes hours of road closures, drivers want more cautious big rig operators
EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH, La (NBC33) — Overnight, an 18 wheeler overturned on I-12 causing traffic headaches all afternoon.
The west bound lanes did not reopen until 3:00 p.m.
It's become a pretty common scene on parts of I-12 in East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parishes - lots of cars with no place to go.
Stephanie Ouro is on I-12 every day. She says the mix of construction zones, careless car and truck drivers, and simply not paying attention is more a problem each time the traffic stops.
“It gets kind of scary,” stated Ouro. “You really don't want to go around them or anything because the roads are so narrow.”
She says the trucks, like the one that caused the latest closure, are in too much of a hurry, so much of a rush, they're making the interstate a place to avoid.
“They should be more courteous, and maybe even understand they are huge and we're tiny cars. It could be dangerous for them to do anything crazy.”
DOTD says it's a mix of cars and trucks. They say everyone needs to pay attention, especially on this stretch of I-12 that has seen more than just a few accidents since construction began.
While drivers like Ouro agree, she says the drivers behind the big rigs just need to slow down even when all the construction wraps up.
“It does make it a little more dangerous if they don't really know what they're doing.”
