BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Several crashes and an increase of drivers for the Thanksgiving holiday are causing massive traffic delays around the Baton Rouge area.
Five crashes on surface streets were reported between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. As for the Interstate, a crash on the Mississippi River Bridge at 2:00 p.m. is causing traffic to move at a crawl. Heavy congestion is being reported to the Nicholson exit and the 10/12 split.
Historically the day before Thanksgiving is considered to be one of the busiest for roadways. About 43.6 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between November 21 and November 25 for the holiday, an increase of 0.7 percent over last year.
With so many on the roads, traffic crashes increase. The Louisiana State Police have investigated a total of 14 fatal crashes on State roads over the past 5 days.
