More people have decided not to have children in the U.S. In fact, birth rates are down nearly ten percent across the country.

New data suggests young women aren't having as many children, but birth rates for women in their forties are on the rise.

One Baton Rouge woman NBC33 spoke with says younger people are more focused on their careers instead of having kids.

“I think it wasn't that long ago that it was traditional in the south to, after high school, get married and start a family,” stated resident Wendy Bookman. “Now people are more driven in their careers, and they want to be successful. So they're waiting to have children."

Experts say that as the economy improves, the birth rate will begin to make a comeback.
