AUSTIN, TX (KVEO) — The State of Texas filed a lawsuit against BP America for their role in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The lawsuit came to light after the Gulf states, federal government, as well as BP, could not resolve damages associated with harm caused to the Gulf of Mexico.
Texas filed the lawsuit to preserve the State's claims against BP and other defendants in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in Beaumont.
The state is seeking civil penalties for every day of oil discharge and for every barrel of oil that was discharged; lost sales tax, state hotel occupancy tax and mixed beverage tax revenue; revenue lost from state park entrance, facility, activity and concession fees; and damages to natural resources, including wildlife and coastal ecosystems and habitats caused by the released oil, chemical dispersant and attorney's fees.
