BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC33) — Some of the money has finally been received, but not enough to satisfy angry employees of Crestworth Learning Academy.
"We appreciate the fact they received some," said Lyn Legier, an attorney hired by the employees. "The fact is, they're to receive it all in a lump sum."
Legier was hired to represent the employees on Tuesday, a day before a meeting with the Crestworth board produced no answers on why they weren't getting paid or when they could expect a check. Many in the audience were frustrated with the board and walked out of that meeting.
"Is this the condition you want a teacher to be in who's instructing your child? I don't think so," Legier said.
Now the teachers have gotten one paycheck, but they were previously told they're next paycheck on August 15 would not be given to them either. It's now up to the teachers on whether or not they choose to pursue legal action against the board at Crestworth for vacation and sick pay and also for any overdraft fees they've received for overdrawn accounts.
Legier said she's ready to file suit if her clients choose to do so.
Calls to the chairman of the board for Crestworth Learning Academy were not returned. Crestworth was recently taken over by the state's Recovery School District, however they would not be liable for any money owed to the employees for previous work.
