Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — The United Steel Workers held a rally on the State Capitol steps for a veteran they say was illegally fired.
They say 24 year military veteran Derrick Forestier was let go from his job with the North American Salt Mine allegedly for going to a Veterans Administration appointment.
The United Steel Workers say this is only the latest example of discrimination against U.S. military veterans.
"Apparently, this same thing is happening all across the country to veterans returning back from the Iraqi war,” stated Jim Lafton with USW. “It's time - it's got to stop. "
Representative Lloyd Doggett of Texas has introduced the Wounded Veterans Job Security Act to protect veterans from discrimination in the workplace for time spent receiving treatment for injuries and disabilities caused by their service.
