State of Emergency declared for New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La (NBC33) — THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: Mayor Landrieu has declared a state of emergency in New Orleans due to the marsh fire that continues to burn and blow a plume of smoke and ash into the air.
WDSU NBC News in New Orleans reports that Mayor Landrieu declared the state of emergency because about 1.4 million people are affected by the smoke moving across several parishes.
ORIGINAL STORY: A huge marsh fire continues to burn in the New Orleans area. Now winds are pushing the huge plume of smoke and ash over Chalmette and into Jefferson Parish.
The National Weather Service issued an alert across eight parishes, warning the elderly and people with respiratory diseases to stay inside.
The fire is burning in a marsh area near I-10 and I-510.
Firefighters say they hope rain will help put out the blaze. That could come as early as Wednesday.
