A historic plantation in St. Francisville received a fire scare due to electrical problems.

On July 22, the Fire Protection District #1 of West Feliciana Parish responded to a report of smoke in the attic of Rosedown Plantation’s main home.

Firefighters from Fire Protection District No. 1 and the Town of St. Francisville responded to find utility workers working on the electric utilities for the State Historical site had inadvertently caused a power surge. The power surge caused some electrical components within the main home to overheat and begin smoking.

Firefighters along with Rosedown staff members and utility workers scanned the home with thermal imaging cameras to ensure no fire had occurred in hidden spaces or electrical panels and ensure that the historical home was out of danger.

The extent of damage to the electric system will have to be evaluated by an electrician but it is believed to be minimal to moderate.

Rosedown Plantation is a Louisiana State Historical Site that includes 13 historical buildings and attracts many visitors to the St. Francisville area each year.
