BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) — On August 14, 1945, President Truman announced World War II was over. Now there’s a new push to bring back the emotions of that day and the spirit of patriotism that swept the nation.
Sunday, Veterans across the country celebrated “The Spirit of 45” on the 66th anniversary of the end of WWII. Tuesday, Louisiana's Veterans will gather to celebrate too.
"My wife and I just hollered and hugged,” says WWII Veteran and author Col. Van Mayhall, USAR Ret. “We knew we didn’t have to go anywhere, anytime, from then on."
The USS KIDD Veterans’ Memorial will host a “Spirit of 45” celebration at the Old State Capitol in downtown Baton Rouge Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 11:00 a.m. The event is free and all veterans and their families are invited to attend.
