Shopping carts impeding traffic in Houma

HOUMA, LA — The Houma Police Department has been receiving increasing complaints of shopping carts impeding the flow of traffic in the area of East and Payne Street in East Houma. The department has contacted store managers and requested for them to collect all their carts. Abandoned shopping carts within any subdivision are considered to be a nuisance and litter.
The Houma Police Department will be increasing enforcement of the State Law as it pertains to unauthorized removal of shopping cart, basket, or dairy case which states it shall be a misdemeanor for any person to remove a shopping cart, basket, or dairy case belonging to another from the parking area or grounds of any store without authorization there for.
Houma Police are asking citizens to not remove any shopping carts and whoever commits the crime of unauthorized removal of a shopping cart, basket, or dairy case from the parking area or grounds of a store will be issued a summons and fined not more than one hundred dollars, or imprisoned for not more than six months, or both.
