Hundreds gathered Friday to remember and celebrate the life of Shelby Homes. He was a stat man for McKinley high sports and a former LSU intern. He was gunned down 2 weeks ago, a half-mile from his home in old south Baton Rouge.

"He's touched a lot of lives," said friend of Shelby’s, David Mills

It was a reflection on the life of a man who impacted so many people over the years.

"He was larger than life."

Hundreds of people filed into the church wearing something you wouldn't expect for a funeral.

"Shelby was an avid Saint’s fan. In fact the bearers are even wearing Saints jerseys today and those of us who knew him wanted to represent with our Saints gear,” noted Mills.

Friday was not just a day to mourn or say goodbye, it was a celebration of life.

"We miss you terribly and we love you- go saints go tigers," said Trey Earle, a friend who gave the Euology.

He was gunned down, unexpectedly before his 40th birthday. Shelby Holmes’s death is something many people are still trying to grasp.

"I still can’t believe he's gone at such a young age," said good friend, Louis Handel.

His killer is still at large. He is someone many want to see held accountable to finally give everyone closure.

"It’s sad when a guy like him gets taken from us for no reason. So if anyone saw anything or knows anything please let the police know."

Although he's gone, his close friends believe he's doing just fine up above.

“I know he's looking down from heaven and maybe doing his dance and doing some boudin and cracklings or all we know," said Earle.

Now, friends and family can let Shelby’s memory live on and hope his stories are told for years to come.

"Live every moment to the fullest was the constant definition of Shelby Holmes."

Shelby was an organ donor and one of his kidneys went to a good friend of his.
