TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WDSU-CNN) — The mother of a seven-year-old girl is breathing a sigh of relief, now that her daughter has a new, safer bus stop in Tangipahoa Parish.
Up till now, Danaria Jones has been catching the bus to school in Hammond at the intersection of Old Baton Rouge Highway and Hinson.
That’s until Danaria’s mother, Dawn’ya Jones, recently learned that a convicted sex offender lives right across the street from the bus stop.
The 67-year-old was convicted of forcible rape in California back in 1981.
The mother took her concerns to the school system, where she was first told it was out of their hands.
“I mean, there are two other buses that come down our street to pick up children, and they are older than my daughter,” stated Dawn’ya. “I don't understand what the problem is."
Once Dawn'ya's story got out, Superintendent Mark Kowle took notice. He spoke with someone who owns a business a little closer to their house, and the owner agreed to let the bus turn around in his parking lot.
Danaria will be picked up at her new bus stop beginning tomorrow.
