School speaks after teen dies in gym
GEISMAR, La. (NBC33) — Ironically, the dark clouds gathered over Dutchtown High School Thursday on what turned out to be a sad day for the school.
"We're a family, and we're hurting," said Athletic Director Benny Saia. "We're here to try to get through this."
For reasons unknown at this time, 14 year-old Burke Cobb collapsed while playing basketball inside the schools gym. Paramedics responded administering cpr, and the teen was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake, but it was too late. Cobb was dead.
"He was a part of our team, always will be," Saia said. "Right now we need prayers."
Cobb was an incoming freshman at Dutchtown. He had just finished up with a football workout Thursday, before stepping in the gym with friends as he waited for ride home.
The athletic director said he spoke with Cobb's family and that they're taking the news hard. He said Cobb has two younger brothers.
"We just want to really try to help his family and our team get through a really tough time," Saia said.
Saia said it's too early to speculate on whether they will make changes to their football workouts. As of now, there is no word on a cause of death.
