LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) — The City of Lake Charles should look a lot greener. As part of the Re-Tree LC program, 500 trees were given away Saturday, March 10 in the morning for residents to plant.
People drove up through the Lake Charles Community Garden for the free-tree giveaway. Those who showed up early had a chance to choose from eight different types of trees: Live Oak; Overcup Oak; Bald Cypress; Tulip Poplar; Crape Myrtle (Muskogee); Southern Magnolia; Crape Myrtle (Natchez); Crape Myrtle (Partly Pink).
The event opened at 10:00 a.m. and organizers say by 11:00 a.m. they had already given away more than 250 trees.
"We have had a great turnout. The Magnolias of course went first. Those were really popular and so are the crape myrtles," said Claire Forbes, with the Lake Charles City Planning Department.
Forbes said the 1,000 trees were made possible through a grant and that the City hopes to make this an annual event.
"We are thinking about long term green infrastructure, thinking about our trees and putting up trees around the city and another 500 of our trees will also go up in the city parks. So we hope to continue this program and replace a lot of trees that were taken down by hurricanes," said Forbes.
The Boy Scouts and Civil Air Patrol will help plant the additional 500 trees around the city. Meanwhile each person was given an informational pamphlet to help them grow their tree.
