Baton Rouge's provisional Chief of Police will be sworn in today and remain in the position for the next 90 days. Tomorrow, the Baton Rouge Metro Council will discuss the possibility of changing the position to elected public vote.

Lieutenant Carl Dabadie, Jr., has been acting as chief of the Baton Rouge Police Department since Dewayne White was told he was being fired earlier this month. The ceremony will take place in the Metropolitan Council chambers at 11:30 p.m.

Currently the Mayor-President is responsible for appointing an individual to the position. However, on Wednesday, Feb. 27, members of the Metro Council will discuss whether that should be changed.

Councilwoman C. Denise Marcelle is pushing the idea of allowing the public to vote on which candidate they want to see fill the position. She attempted to bring it up in the last Metro Council meeting two weeks ago, but Councilman Delgado shot that down.

However, voting for police chief is still a long ways away. The city's plan of government needs to change, and then the city would have to find time to schedule a special election.
