BATON ROUG, LA (NBC33) —
In Baton Rouge, a one-year-old child was found dead in its bed by his mother. That baby was found around 6 o'clock on Sunday morning.
Police call it a suspicious death, but neighbors wonder why no one has been arrested yet.
Three hours before police arrive at a home on Erie Street the mother of the one-year-old child found her baby boy not moving. But it took her three hours to pick up the phone and call the cops for help.
When police arrived they tried to revive the child unsuccessfully.
That's when Cpl. L'Jean Mckneely says his officers began to notice bruises on the boys body and the mother admitted she did something to the child: " Upon interviewing her she said she had spanked him that night before putting him to bed.:
Neighbors we spoke to say they're outraged that the mom admitted she hit the child but is not in jail tonight. BRPD says they won't make any charges until autopsy reports come in, and they know exactly why the child died.
"We just want to make sure the child died from abuse, and if it is abuse we want to make sure we have everything inline our case is strong. And we are making the right arrest," said Mckneely.
While police where investigating the death of the one year old, police found three other children in the home who did not have the same mom. Two of the children had diaper rash so bad they were bleeding. Now child protective services will step in and investigate what went on in the home.
Cpl. Mckneely said "It's a good thing we were able to intervene now hopefully they can get those kids some assistance so they can grow up and be productive environment."
Mckneely warns parents tonight that the cycle of abuse ends with you, and remember how you act will determine how your child behaves as an adult.
