EVANGELINE PARISH, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: Officials tell us the body recovered from Evangeline Parish has been taken to the FACES lab here in Baton Rouge for identification. We’re told it could take a day or two to officially ID the remains.
ORIGINAL: Police have received what could be their last and perhaps most important tip in the case of missing college student Mickey Shunick.
"This morning we received some credible information about a possible body here in Evangeline parish. The information we received is credible so we feel very confident that we are searching in the right direction," Cpl. Paul Mouton with the Lafayette Police department explained.
Though police won't say who this credible source is, they were lead to a remote stretch along LA 10 in Evangeline parish. Once there, just past a small family cemetery, they made a discovery they believe will bring this case closer to an end.
"We do feel strongly though that this is Mickey Shunick. But we just can't say for 100% that it is in fact her," Cpl. Mouton, added.
Search crews arrived Tuesday morning and worked past nightfall uncovering and processing the remains found there in the wooded area where it’s believed they’ve found Shunick’s body. With such a large area to work with police have said it will take at least 24 hours, and possibly up to three days, to get a positive ID on the victim.
"Well obviously there's a large area and they took in a lot of material. Not only dirt, but articles along with the body so there's a lot of evidence to be examined," Mouton added, “they're talking about clothing. Possibly some jewelry, Things of that nature."
Those close to the Shunick family say obviously the day’s events have been difficult, but they believe it could be closer to the end of this long road.
