The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office has reported that a local pilot made an emergency landing in a pasture approximately eight miles from the Hammond airport shortly after 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10.

On board the single engine plane were Nicholas Burtchaell, 60, of Folsom, and Otis D. Briggs of Kentwood. Burtchaell is the owner and pilot of the plane. Briggs is an instructor pilot.

According to reports from the pilots, the plane was flying at about 3,000 feet when they noticed that the plane was losing oil pressure. The system quickly began to fail.

The pilots began a descent, but at about 600 feet, the engine completely shut down.

The two men located an open pasture clear of houses and power lines where they could attempt a safe landing.

The pilots successfully landed the plane, and neither of them suffered any injuries.

The landing site was in Folsom near Turn Pike Road.

The Federal Aviation Administration was reported to be on their way to the site for assessment and removal of the aircraft.
