After months without an active police department, Sorrento will now be patrolled by Ascension Parish Sheriff deputies at night and on the weekends, but what does that mean for the people who live there?

Sorrento is Reno Gregoire's home. He grew up here and recently moved back to start his own business, and as a business owner, he wants to make sure his business is safe.

"I'm sure they patrol other cities 24/7. Why not Sorrento?," Reno questioned. "We're open during the day, and if somebody's going to rob us, we have no police department. So, I don't feel too good about it."

With the city's new arrangement with Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies will patrol the streets of Sorrento, but only from 4:30 in the afternoon to 8:00 in the morning and on weekends.

"Not too safe. I can't explain it. They don't have anybody to call for 911," Reno said."We have to wait until Ascension Parish, and there's no police department here during the time, it's going to take a little longer."

However, Reno wants to know, will people try to take advantage of that?

"With people knowing that the police department is not going to patrol during the day time, it may become a problem," Reno said.

Reno's wife feels the same way. They opened up their business a little more than a year, but as important as their business is, they don't like the idea of sacrificing their safety.

"Because of our business, we're open six days a week, all day long, things can happen during the day... It would be nice to have patrol all the time," Hope said.

Right now, the police department and the sheriff's office are working to negotiate full law enforcement coverage during weekday hours.
