Last night, shortly after 8:30 P.M., Louisiana State Troopers responded to a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on Interstate 55 near mile marker 45 near Amite in Tangipahoa Parish.

Initial investigation revealed a 2008 Dodge Avenger operated by Sierah B. Brabham (W/F 25) of Amite was traveling southbound on I-55 in the right lane. A pedestrian, Demetrius J Ruffin (B/M 46) of Independence was walking in the right lane of travel close to the fog line. The right front of the Dodge struck Ruffin; lifting him off of the ground and onto the Dodge. Ruffin continued over the Dodge and came to rest on the right shoulder. Ruffin received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office.

Brabham was wearing her seatbelt and alcohol is not suspected on her part. Blood was taken from Ruffin and submitted for a toxicological analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers urge both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Louisiana State Law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of travel lanes at all times.
