Baton Rouge (NBC 33) — In Lafayette Parish, a local hospital is in serious jeopardy. University Medical Center has suffered several budget cuts in the past. Now, the hospital is facing the possibility of another 35% budget reduction that officials say would cripple the hospital.
The center handles about 250,000 outpatient visits a year, including 150 cancer treatments a month, and an additional 1,200 aids patients.
In St. John the Baptist Parish, officials are still working to get the schools back up and operational. Monday was the first day back to school for about 650 students who attend Lake Pontchartrain Elementary, which was damaged during the storm. The students are now being transported to six different schools throughout the district. Interim School Superintendent Herbert Smith says Isaac brought 16 inches of water to schools and left behind at least $4,000,000 in damages. Lake Pontchartrain Elementary students are going to schools in Garyville right now, while work at their school continues.
