Livingston - Six people are locked up after deputies say they scammed people out of money. We're told the group claimed to be from an asphalt company, and went up to houses unsolicited, offering to patch up driveways. Deputies say in one case they quoted an 85 year old man 90 dollars, but ripped up his driveway and then said it was five thousand dollars to fix things. The six are behind bars and facing a list of charges including racketeering.
East Baton Rouge - The Department of Public Works says a bridge off of Jones Creek has had to close because of critical deficiencies. Inspectors say they were looking at the Woodlake Drive Bridge when they found the problems. DOTD says the closure should last several weeks.
Ascension - Smokers are getting help to kick the habit. An eight week stop smoking class is about to start, and it’s free. The Ascension Counseling Center is offering it to residents 18 and older. Last year the stop smoking class helped 36 percent of smokers stop lighting up altogether, and about half of the class got people to cut down. To get yourself signed up call 225-621-1114. All classes are held on Tuesdays from four to six at the Ascension Complex in Gonzales.
