Department of Public Works officials announced today that the bridge on Claycut Road over Ward Creek will reopen to traffic Friday morning. However, they said the East Garfield Street bridge over Corporation Canal will close Friday morning due to safety concerns.

The Claycut Road Bridge, located west of S. Foster Drive between Bienveille Street and Moore Street, has been closed for repairs since May 23. DPW Chief Design Engineer Thomas Stephens said the Claycut Road Bridge should be open to traffic by noon Friday.

Stephens said the East Garfield Street Bridge over Corporation Canal north of LSU will close to traffic because some timber caps have deteriorated to the point of causing safety concerns.

Stephens noted that the East Garfield Street Bridge was already included in the current Louisiana Recovery Authority’s replacement list. He noted that design of a replacement span is underway.

The East Garfield Street Bridge will remain closed pending replacement, but Stephens noted that there are a number of possible detour routes in the area so that motorists can easily circumvent it.

Anyone with questions can call the Department of Public Works Engineering Division at (225) 389-3186.

This is very good news as I cross this bridge every day going to and from work. With Capitol Heights being one way west and the bridge being closed, it was quite a problem. I had to use Government Street to go east to get home. Thanks for the good news NBC 33 and thanks to the Department of Public Works as well.
