Shoppers at the Tanger Outlets will soon have to chip in a few more bucks to get a good bargain. That's because the Gonzales City Council approved a new one percent sales tax for shoppers there.

Beginning July 1 sales tax at the out will go up.

But, shoppers say they go to the mall to get great deals not break the bank.

"You are adding another one percent to everything," said shopper Zeb Mayhew. "It just goes back right into there pockets it's just a tax I see no value to me."

Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux says the city's 30 percent of tax revenue goes toward making it easier to get around the outlet area.

"The traffic is horrendous there specially late afternoon and holidays, so that's what the one cent would aid the City of Gonzales for," said Arceneaux.

Right now the city is in talks with the state to curb the traffic congestion on La 30.

"If you're looking at traffic from the Tanger Outlet and the traffic from Lamar Dixon, we know we need a light or the possibility of a round about right there," said Arceneaux.

The other 70 percent of the revenue raised from that tax will go back to the mall.

According to Tanger officials the cash will be used for up-keep of the property and to build more stores. For shoppers more stores mean more places to hunt for deals even if they have to pay a little more.

"Not one percent," said shopper Debbie Sills. "I don't think people will really look at it that way. You'll just see it as being an outlet mall and the deals are probably better."
