CHALMETTE, LA (WGNO) — St Bernard is "giving back" in a big way, raising thousands of dollars to benefit neighboring hurricane Isaac victims.
Susan Ross with the St. Bernard Gives Back crew says they've has been planning their one thousand meal spaghetti and meatball dinner fundraise for two weeks.
"We have parade of prizes. We have delicious homemade desert. We have a 50/50 raffle and a basket raffle and of course we always have a jar for donations."
People in St. Bernard are eager to support their neighbors in Plaquemines Parish because they understand exactly what they're going through.
"We know what it feels like to lose our homes," says Ross.
In fact, the motto at Thursday evenings fundraise is "remember the feeling."
But then the motherload of all donations walked through the door, "The Meraux Foundation just gave us $10,000 dollars. I can't stop crying," says Ross.
That one donation of $10,000 is more than St. Bernard Gives Back raised all of last year.
They estimate close to 600 homes in Plaquemines were destroyed by flood water.
